The modern nation of Israel was founded on May 14, 1948. But Israel traces its beginning to the patriarch Abraham (1906 BC). Early dates are problematic, but it is believed that Joshua and the children of Israel entered the promised land around 1406 BC.

Throughout its history, Israel's story has been marked by conquest and dispersion. The Assyrians (722 BC), Babylonians (586 BC), and then the Romans (70 AD) all contributed to dispersing the population throughout Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.

In 1948, after the Holocaust, the nation of Israel was formed to provide a homeland to a people who had been displaced for 2,000 years.

Hebrew is the official language of Israel. As a fun activity, get Google Translate and see if you can figure out what the signs say.

There are many other languages commonly spoken in Israel, including Arabic, English, and Russian. Most people in Israel speak more than one language.
