Cape Reinga Lighthouse is located on the North Island of New Zealand. The Cape Reinga Lighthouse is at the very tip of Ninety Mile Beach. This beach got its name from a story that it took 3 days to cross on horseback, according to European visitors. Because the horses usually went about 30 miles per day, they decided it was probably about ninety miles long. However, it is actually only 55 miles long.
The lighthouse was the last manned lighthouse built in New Zealand. It was completed in 1941, at which time a lighthouse keeper ensured it remained operational. In 1987, the lighthouse was fully automated, and all of the lighthouse keepers left.
The lighthouse is not open to the public, but there are trails in the area, and you can walk up by the lighthouse. The area offers amazing views of the area where the Tasman Sea meets the Pacific Ocean.
